Instructors

The Brave New Workshop

The Brave New Workshop (BNW) Theatre has been writing, performing and producing original sketch comedy, music and comedy improvisation longer than any other theatre in the United States. As a 'creative gymnasium' (now in its 49th year of operation), the BNW is a truly unique place to laugh, learn, think, and play. More than 250 original productions have been mounted on BNW stages since 1958! The BNW also boasts an impressive group of alumni including Al Franken (head writer/actor Saturday Night Live), Mo Collins (MAD TV), Cedric Yarbrough (Reno 911), Melissa Peterman (The Reba Show) to name a few. The Brave New Institute (BNI) is the creative playground and school for the BNW. Our improvisation classes for youth take an individual focus -- we help each student find their own path to creativity and "play" on stage. We emphasize instinctive play, listening, group and individual trust, as well as ensemble dynamics and basic acting. These classes are held in a highly supportive environment -- our goal is to help each student fall in love with improvisation and find more self confidence. Our instructors have a minimum five years experience performing improvisation and writing comedy sketches.

Dave Reinitz

Dave Reinitz will be teaching the standup classes for the week long workshop.  His experience includes years of performing his stand up routine as is known as the "Jet Blue" Guy.  He became interested in teaching and has training from the Greg Dean Stand-up Comedy Workshops in Brockport, NY as well as other workshops and trainings.  Dave loves what he does and loves sharing his art even more.

Class Descriptions

Improv Class
This class will teach the basics of improvisational comedy performance. We will be working on creating scenes and learning how to connect with your scene partner and organically create comedy based from audience suggestions. This class is designed to teach the students how to trust their instincts and find the funny through truthful reactions and heightened points of view.

Sketch Writing
This class is based on our 49 year history of writing original comedy sketches using our Key Elements system of writing which is outlined in our book The Art of the Laugh. We help students take an idea and develop it into a comedy sketch that has a satirical point and grabs the audiences attention.

Stand-Up
This class will teach the basics of performing a stand-up comedy routine as well as some writing skills.  This fundamental class helps you be comfortable not only on stage but in talking to anyone in general!
